Assoc. Dr. Elif Öncü explains the processes to be followed for patients who have previously had implants but whose implants have fallen out or are at risk of falling out after a certain period (for example, after 2 months).
Why Doesn’t an Implant Heal or Fall Out?
First, we need to understand why the implant doesn’t heal, that is, why it doesn’t osseointegrate (fusion with the bone). There can be many reasons for this:
- Trauma during surgery,
- Insufficient attention to oral hygiene after surgery,
- Smoking,
- Biological problems in the fusion of bone and implant.
Can an Implant Be Placed Again in the Same Place?
If the source of the problem is bone deficiency or insufficient bone volume as a result of a three-dimensional evaluation (clinical, radiographic and tomography), we must first increase the bone volume. After strengthening the bone structure with various bone augmentation methods (autogenous or synthetic biomaterials), it is possible to place an implant again in the same area.
The background of each case is different. In cases of failed implants, proper planning and examination by a specialist physician constitute the safest step.
