What are the differences between cryosurgery (freezing) and laser ablation methods used in the treatment of gum pigmentation (hyperpigmentation)?

When dark melanin pigmentation in the gums causes aesthetic concerns, two modern methods are available. Cryosurgery involves locally freezing the hyperpigmented gum tissue with special probes containing liquid nitrogen gas, triggering cell death (necrosis) and causing the tissue to shed over time; this method is painless but depth control is difficult and carries the risk of uncontrolled thermal damage to surrounding tissues. In laser ablation (especially Er:YAG or CO2 lasers), the laser beam is specifically absorbed by melanin cells, and the tissue is vaporized layer by layer with micron-level precision (ablation). The laser method is considered the gold standard in pink aesthetics today because it offers the surgeon complete depth control, instantly stops bleeding, and provides much faster and more predictable epithelial tissue healing after the operation.
