Traditional metal-based or some zirconium crowns can be bonded with conventional cements such as zinc phosphate or glass ionomer, which provide only mechanical retention between the tooth and the crown. However, glass-ceramic structures such as lithium disilicate (E.max) are inherently brittle and only gain their intrinsic strength by chemically bonding to the tooth. In the adhesive cementation protocol, the inner surface of the crown is etched with hydrochloric acid, silanized (a bonding agent is applied), and acid-bonding is applied to the tooth surface, followed by bonding with a dual-cure resin cement; as a result of this process, the tooth, cement, and porcelain become a single body, stress is evenly distributed across the crown surface, and microleakage is prevented, thus preventing crown fracture and guaranteeing long-term retention.
