Soft liners are silicone-based cushioning materials applied to the palate portion of dentures, especially in patients with excessive jawbone resorption, bone protrusions (exostosis) causing significant pressure from the prosthesis, or those with very thin mucosal layers. These materials provide immense comfort and prevent pain in the first few months. However, soft liners do not have a permanent lifespan; they lose their properties in oral fluids within an average of 6 months to 1 year. Over time, the acids in the mouth and brushing mechanics harden this soft silicone, making it porous and causing it to peel at the edges. In terms of hygiene, soft-lined dentures should absolutely not be brushed with hard brushes, otherwise the silicone layer will tear. Cleaning should only be done with soft cloths, warm soapy water, and special denture cleaning tablets, and they should be completely replaced in the clinic when their lifespan is over.
