What kinds of problems can arise if the lateral contact points (contact areas) between crown teeth are loose?

When making a veneer bridge or single crown, the tightness of the contact point (proximal contact) with the adjacent natural tooth must be precisely adjusted. Dental floss should encounter only slight resistance. If this contact area is left loose or open, fibrous foods (especially meat, bread, etc.) will be trapped vertically in the gum pocket between the two teeth with each chew (food impaction). This quickly leads to gum abscesses, severe pain, bone loss, and rapid decay of the root surface of the adjacent natural tooth. Loose contacts are one of the most dangerous restoration errors, reducing the patient’s quality of life and rapidly eroding the gum tissue, requiring the veneer to be removed and re-expanded in the laboratory.
