After teeth are reduced in size for veneers, the placement of temporary veneers during the 1-2 week period until permanent restorations arrive is not only an aesthetic necessity but also a biological requirement. Without temporary veneers, the reduced teeth may tilt sideways or extend into the opposing tooth space due to the loss of contact points. This manifests as the teeth not fitting properly or being too high when the permanent veneers arrive. Periodontally, the unprotected gum tissue grows above the incisal line, obscuring the gingival margin; this leads to gum compression, severe bleeding, and incomplete adhesive adhesion during veneer bonding. Furthermore, severe, acute pain may develop due to exposed dentin tubules.
