In bridge prostheses, does pain in the supporting (abutment) teeth necessitate the removal of the bridge?

If there is decay or nerve inflammation underneath, root canal treatment can be attempted through the chewing surface of the bridge, but if the decay has spread below the gum line, the bridge may need to be removed.
