When a primary tooth is extracted at an early age due to decay or trauma, a space maintainer is essential to prevent the adjacent teeth from tilting into the gap and the permanent tooth underneath from closing. The primary criteria for selection are the child’s age and cooperation. If the child is very young (3-6 years old) and not yet aware of the importance of wearing and removing a removable appliance, fixed space maintainers (band-loop or lingual arch) that are bonded to the adjacent tooth and remain fixed in the mouth are preferred. Fixed space maintainers are generally effective for one or two missing teeth. If there are multiple missing teeth, and it is necessary to support the child’s chewing function and speech, and the child is mature enough to use an appliance, removable space maintainers (child prostheses) that are custom-made from an oral impression are planned.
