While traditional dentistry considers fluoride the gold standard in caries prevention, holistic dentistry focuses on fluoride-free alternatives due to the risks of systemic toxicity, thyroid function suppression (iodine inhibition), and fluorosis associated with fluoride. The two strongest alternatives are “Nano-Hydroxyapatite” (nHAp) and “Bioactive Glass” (NovaMin) technologies. Hydroxytapatite is the main mineral that already makes up 97% of human tooth enamel. Toothpastes containing nano-sized hydroxyapatite do not create an artificial layer by directly binding to microscopic cracks and demineralized areas on the enamel surface; instead, they rebuild the enamel at the crystalline level with its own natural mineral (biomimetic remineralization). Bioactive glass, upon contact with saliva, releases calcium and phosphate ions, providing natural mineral protection and completely neutralizing acid attack.
