What is “Immediate Denture” (Temporary Prosthesis) application in edentulous jaws, and what is the transition process to permanent prosthesis?

Immediate dentures are a procedure where, on the “same day” after all loose or infected teeth are extracted, a temporary, removable prosthesis is fitted into the patient’s mouth. This prevents the patient from leaving the clinic completely edentulous and aesthetically unappealing. This prosthesis also acts as a kind of tampon/bandage over the extraction wounds, stopping bleeding and limiting swelling during the first week. However, as the extraction sockets heal, the jawbone and gums shrink and lose volume very rapidly within the first 3 to 6 months. Therefore, the immediate prosthesis will become loose and loose in the jaw within a few months. During this transition period, temporary soft liners (lining) are placed inside the prosthesis in the clinic to fill the gaps. Approximately 6 months after the extraction, when the bone and mucosa are fully stable, the immediate prosthesis completes its function, and new impressions are taken from the patient to produce the permanent prosthesis.
