Intraoral galvanism occurs when two or more different metals with varying electropotentials are present in the oral cavity (for example, an amalgam filling in one tooth, a metal-supported porcelain or gold crown in the adjacent tooth). Saliva acts as an electrolyte (conductive fluid), initiating a microscopic electrical current (galvanic current) between the metals. This is similar to the formation of a small battery in the mouth. Measured currents can sometimes reach values much higher than the microvoltage of the human nervous system itself. This continuous, chronic microelectric current can directly trigger neurological symptoms such as persistent metallic taste in the tongue and cheeks, chronic migraine-like headaches, trigeminal neuralgia-like facial pain, sleep disorders, and tinnitus. In a holistic approach, these metals are completely removed, rendering the mouth metal-free.
