Traditional veneer production uses trays and silicone-based impression materials placed in the mouth. These materials carry a risk of deformation upon removal, expansion of the plaster during casting, and shrinkage during wax modeling in the laboratory, among other physical error margins. In CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology, teeth are scanned three-dimensionally at the micron level using intraoral scanners. This digital data is transferred directly to a computer without any physical alteration. Computer software calculates the marginal fit of the veneer with a precision of 20-30 microns, and micrometric milling devices shape the porcelain block according to this data with zero error. As a result, no microscopic gaps remain at the gum line where bacteria can infiltrate, extending the lifespan of the veneer.
