Bacteria on the inner surface of root canals adhere to each other, forming a highly resistant, armored layer called a “biofilm,” resistant to external factors and antibiotics. Standard needle irrigations may be insufficient to dislodge this biofilm. In Laser-Activated Irrigation (LAI) technology, a special laser fiber tip (e.g., an Er:YAG laser) is inserted into the canal while it is filled with irrigation solution. The laser energy creates micro-bubbles that burst thousands of times per second within the solution; this is called “acoustic fluidization and cavitation.” These massive shock waves and micro-jet streams mechanically break down and dislodge the bacterial biofilm in the most remote corners of the root canals and in the lateral canals, delivering the chemically lethal power of the solution to all the tubules within milliseconds, ensuring perfect sterilization.
