The polymethyl methacrylate (acrylic resin) material used in the manufacture of full dentures can contain thousands of microscopic air bubbles and pores (porosity) in its internal structure if the liquid-to-powder ratio is incorrectly adjusted or if it is heated too quickly during the baking process in the laboratory. These microscopic pores make the surface of the prosthesis absorbent, almost like a sponge. Fungal microorganisms called Candida albicans, which live in the mouth, infiltrate and settle in these pores on the palate surface of the prosthesis, forming armored biofilm layers. Even if the patient brushes their prosthesis, they cannot mechanically remove the fungi inside the pores. This leads to the palate tissue under the prosthesis becoming bright red, hyperemic, and painful; this is called “Dental Stomatitis”. To prevent this, high-quality laboratory work should be maintained, and prostheses should be soaked overnight in special chemical disinfectant tablets.
